GIS Specialist

Will create, update and maintain aspects of the citywide Geographic Information System (GIS), infrastructure mapping and inventory for the City of Gillette.

Will utilize a variety of computer aided equipment and software to perform assigned tasks that may include infrastructure mapping, asset management, data collection and documentation. Maintains and verifies citywide GIS data that could include utility infrastructure, addressing and/or development information.

Compiles and evaluates mapping data and information. Prepares maps for use by City staff, public and private entities. Responds to or refers questions from the general public regarding information contained in the citywide GIS. Drafts, composes, reviews, edits and/or revises a variety of written documents, summaries and reports. Prepares and presents written and oral reports for internal and external audiences. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

  • A high school diploma or GED required.
  • Two (2) years of relevant mapping, drafting, GIS or closely related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Must have at the time of application and must maintain a valid Driver’s License.
  • May be required to obtain within a specified period of employment and must maintain licenses and/or certifications required to perform the functions of the position.
  • May be required to lift and/or carry heavy, bulky supplies, materials and/or other items weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • May be exposed to potential physical harm, extreme weather conditions and infectious diseases.
  • Required to work outside the traditional work schedule. Subject to call out and/or callback.
Additional Requirements:
  • Knowledge of applicable city, county, state and Federal statutes, rules, ordinances, codes, regulations, administrative orders, case law and other governing rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrated skill in reading and interpreting plats, blueprints and design sets, basic GIS and GPS practices, basic surveying and mapping practices. Computer assisted drafting and design practices and methods, and customer service.
  • Demonstrate ability in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands and working within deadlines to complete projects.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with a variety of coworkers, customers and general public.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of commonly used and specialized software and operating systems/applications that include ArcView, AutoCAD, databases, and GPS related software.
